Working Remotely for International Clients from Pakistan

Remote work has done more for Pakistani developers than any local job market change. A developer in Lahore can now earn multiples of the local salary without leaving. The technical skills are the easy part; the operational side is where people struggle.

Where the work actually is

Freelance platforms

Upwork and Fiverr are the obvious entry point. Lower rates, faster start, and they own the client relationship. Fine as a first step, poor as a destination.

Remote job boards

Better pay, real contracts, longer engagements. Competition is global, so your portfolio and communication matter more than your location. Many boards let you filter for roles open to your region — do that filter first or you will waste weeks.

Direct outreach and referrals

The highest-paying work is almost never advertised. It comes from someone who worked with you before, or from someone who saw your work publicly. This is the channel worth building deliberately, because it compounds.

Agencies as subcontractors

Underrated. Agencies abroad regularly need overflow capacity. Steady work, no client management, lower rate than direct but far less sales effort.

Pricing: the mistake almost everyone makes

Pakistani developers routinely price against the Pakistani market when working with clients paying US or European rates. You do not need to match Western rates, but you should not be at a tenth of them either.

Price against the value delivered and the client market, adjusted for your experience — not against what a local company would pay. Being drastically cheap also signals low quality to a certain kind of client, which filters you out of exactly the work you want.

Timezones

Pakistan is UTC+5, which is workable with most of the world:

  • UK and Europe — 4 to 5 hours behind. Excellent overlap; their morning is your afternoon.
  • US East Coast — 9 to 10 hours behind. Their morning is your evening. Workable with one shifted block.
  • US West Coast — 12 to 13 hours behind. Hard. Expect early morning or late night calls.
  • Australia and Gulf — very good overlap.

Be explicit in the first conversation: state your hours in their timezone and what your overlap window is. Clients handle this fine when told; they get frustrated when they discover it.

Lean on asynchronous communication. A daily written update with what you did, what is next and what is blocked removes most of the need for calls entirely.

Getting paid

  • Payoneer — the standard for platform work, withdraws to local banks, widely accepted
  • Wise — good rates for direct invoices, though availability for Pakistan changes; check current status
  • Direct bank transfer — for larger retainers, usually via a Roshan Digital Account or a business account
  • Cryptocurrency — some clients offer it; understand the local regulatory position before accepting

Get a National Tax Number and declare your income. Export of IT services in Pakistan is treated favourably, and being properly registered makes larger contracts and bank relationships far easier. Working entirely off the books caps how big your clients can be.

Communication is the actual differentiator

Clients rarely replace a developer over skill. They replace them over silence.

  • Reply within one business day, always, even if the reply is "looking at this, will respond properly tomorrow"
  • Send a written update at the end of each working day or week
  • Flag problems as soon as you see them, not when the deadline arrives
  • Say "I do not know yet, I will find out by Thursday" instead of guessing
  • Ask clarifying questions before starting, not halfway through

A moderately skilled developer with excellent communication keeps clients longer than a brilliant one who goes quiet for a week.

Practical setup

  • Backup internet. A second connection or a mobile hotspot is not optional — outages happen and "the internet was down" wears thin quickly.
  • A UPS or inverter that covers your working hours
  • A quiet corner and a decent microphone. Audio quality affects how competent you sound more than most people realise.
  • A separate bank account for freelance income, so your accounting is not archaeology

The trajectory

Roughly how it goes for people who stay with it: platforms for the first year, direct clients and referrals in the second, and by the third either a small team or a specialised niche where you are chosen rather than compared.

The people who reach that third stage are not the most technically gifted. They are the ones who were reliable for long enough that other people started recommending them.
